For most of the show Joey was an actor who rarely got job offers, and you could say he was almost financially dependent on his roommate Chandler. His biggest mistake was that when he landed a lead role on "Days of Our Lives," he wrongly assumed his "jobless" days were behind him and made a lot of reckless financial decisions.
Don't spend money you haven't earned yet
Even when Joey was working as a well-paid, successful actor, he kept spending more than he earned. His biggest mistake was making expensive purchases because he thought he would always earn that much. Income isn't always steady, you know!
What you spend money on matters more than how you earn it
A raise or a bigger income is of course a good thing. But if, instead of thinking about how to spend that extra income wisely and well, you move into a luxury apartment and spend thousands of dollars on mostly pointless purchases, be ready for what comes next.
Repay the people who helped you, with gratitude.
Once Joey has a well-paid job, he pays back the money he borrowed from Chandler. Later, when Chandler quits his job to try something new that he enjoys more, Monica and Chandler go through a hard time financially. Both of them secretly go to Joey to borrow money, and Joey is ready to help his best friends when they need it.
