Rachel Green first appears in the series as a spoiled girl from a wealthy family who grew up getting everything she wanted. After she runs away from her wedding and moves in with Monica, she starts earning her own money for the first time in her life. As the series goes on, Rachel turns into an independent woman. She goes from waitressing to Bloomingdale's, then to Ralph Lauren, and even gets an offer to work for Louis Vuitton in Paris. Yet even though she becomes independent, her habit of overspending barely changes over the whole series.
Here is what we can learn from her story:
A husband is not a financial guarantee
As a child, Rachel relied on her family and had her father pay for everything. When she was first set to marry Barry, she was weighing other things more than any real love for him. Luckily, Rachel made the right decision and became a strong woman who builds her own life.
If you need money, you may not be able to be picky about jobs
After leaving her coffee shop job, Rachel searched hard for work in fashion and sent out hundreds of applications, but got no positive replies. Later she worked as a buyer's assistant. She didn't like that job, but she kept at it until she landed her dream job.
Are you about to pay a high price for something you don't need?
After calling off her wedding, instead of looking for a job and helping around the house, Rachel would spend the whole day shopping. The most interesting part is that she shopped with her father's credit card. In other words, she still depended on someone else for money. And remember when Rachel bought a cat for $1000?
In the end, life is a journey of constant learning. Don't think that managing your money well and becoming financially literate isn't something for you 🙂
